Junior Varsity Baseball Rules

Sportsmanship, Respect for all Players, Coaches and Umpires as well as the CYO Mission Statement is Paramount in Importance.

  1. Schedules will be agreed upon at the beginning of the season and changes will be allowed only at the discretion of the commissioner.
  2. Pony league rules will apply except where noted.
  3. Games will be 6 innings. In the event of a tie during the regular season, extra innings will be allowed at the discretion of the umpire. Completing the game at a later date will be decided by the commissioner.
  4. The umpire will be in complete control during the game. Due respect from ALL players, coaches and parents is a MUST.
  5. A minimum of 8 players is required at the beginning of any game. In this case an automatic out is to be recorded after every 8 batters.
  6. Each player will bat in the batting order. Players may be freely substituted in the field. Since player participation is encouraged, it is suggested that every player be in the field at least 2 innings.
  7. Lineup is set when coaches and umpire meet to discuss ground rules immediately prior to the game. Any player arriving after that point is to be inserted at the end of the lineup. A coach may insert a player into his normal lineup position, prior to the players’ arrival at the game. However, if that player is not present for his turn at bat, an out is recorded for that turn at bat and every subsequent turn at bat for that player. A team is not charged an out for a player that must leave a game early. An injured player may skip a turn at bat without penalty and return to the lineup should circumstances permit. Players may be inserted into fielding positions at any time.
  8. Pitchers are limited to 3 innings per game and a total of 6 innings in any 7 day period. Breaking balls are NOT permitted at this level. A pitcher may not return to pitching, once he is removed. Umpire will warn pitcher when a balk is committed. Runners will not advance. Runners picked off when the umpire has ruled a balk was committed will remain at the base they occupied.
  9. Courtesy runners are allowed only for the pitcher and the catcher and must be the last player to have made an out.
  10. Leads are permitted except when playing on a 60Â’ field. Steals are limited to (3) per inning. The umpire will determine a steal vs. advancing on a passed ball. A runner may score from 3rd base without a hit (i.e. steal, passed ball or overthrow to the pitcher). The only time he may NOT score is on a throw (from the catcher) to 1st or 2nd base on a steal attempt. Note: standard field size is a 75 foot base-path and 54 foot rubber to plate distance. Due to the unique nature of each field these dimensions are adjustable based on each field.
  11. Slide or surrender at all times. Only feet first slides except when a player is returning to a base. Head first slides will result in the runner being ruled out (unless returning to a base).
  12. Batters may NOT advance to 1st base on a dropped 3rd strike.
  13. In the event of darkness or inclement weather, 3 ½ innings if the home team is winning, 4 complete innings if the visiting team is winning will constitute a complete game.
  14. The 10 run rule will be in effect after 4 innings.
  15. Winning team reports scores and pitching results.
  16. Bats may NOT be larger than 2 ¼ in diameter. An umpire (or commissioner) may negate all runs scored if “illegal bats” are available to players. Little league bat rules are in force.
  17. Playoffs: seeding will be based on record against division teams only. Head to head competition will determine seeding for ties; followed by “runs allowed” against the teams involved in the tie; followed by a random draw for seeding. Any division games not played will be a loss for both teams unless previous arrangements have been made with the commissioner. Every team makes the playoffs. Playoffs Start May 25, 2011. Championship Game and All Star game on June 5, 2011.
  18. BOTH TEAMS SHOULD MEET FOR A PRAYER PRIOR TO EVERY GAME.
