January 27, 1:55 PM

On Thursday evening, January 26, at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, Region 11 held tryouts to select representatives for the Archdiocesan Varsity Girls All Star Game. This year's game will be held on January 28 at 5:00 PM at St. Joseph University's Hagan Arena. I know I speak for all the coaches that attended when I say the selection process was very difficult given the level of talent and effort demonstrated by all of the girls. This year, Region 11 is privileged to have four (4) All Star representatives at this year's game. Congratulations to the following girls, who will represent Region 11 in the All Star game:

  • Karen Lapkiewicz, Our Lady of Good Counsel
  • Caitlyn Cunningham,St. Alphonsus
  • Kendall Grasela, St. Alphonsus

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Season!

Happy Thanskgiving!

The 2011-2012 Season promises to be another exciting and eventful season. There are changes to the competitive alignment, with many of the leagues now split into two divisions. The new structure should provide some better scheduling flexibilty, less pressure on already scarce gym times, and more competitive games.

In addition, we've introduced a 3rd/4th grade level this year. Many parishes have already formed teams to compete in this new league. The league "starts" in December, and we are using that month for coaches and administrators to run skills and drills clinics. Games will start in January, and will go into March. There will be no standings for the league.

As we get started, here is some important information for you to review.

We're working on the Region 11 master schedule. A draft version has been created and is being reviewed for changes and updates. We hope to have the master schedule posted to the web site by Wednesday of next week.

Referee Fees for 2011-2012 Season

JV Region $ 28.00 $ 21.00

I hope that you have a holy and happy Thanksgiving spent with family and friends.

Mandatory Playing Time Rules

Varsity Girls

Region Division: All rostered Varsity Region players that regularly attend practices and games and adhere to the principles of CYO athletics are required to play a minimum of 3 minutes of each regular season game. Unlike the Junior Varsity playing time rule, the minimum participation may be spread out across the entire game and does not have to be consecutive. The minimum playing time requirement is waived during the Region 11 Varsity Region playoffs. PENALTY: In any case where compelling documentation is provided that a coach has violated this rule, the commissioner has the latitude to impose sanctions up to and including forfeiture of the game(s) in which the offense(s) occurred.

Parish Division: Because these divisions are largely instructional/recreational, the region requires that coaches let every player play at least 1/3 of each game, depending on the size of the team. Teams with 10 or fewer players should strive to allow each player to play at least ½ of each game.

JV Girls

Region Division: Each player on a team must play at least 3 consecutive minutes per half (9 or more players per team) or 3 1/2 consecutive minutes per half (8 or fewer players per team). This rule is subject to review and change prior to playoffs, however, the minimum playing time rule is still in effect for Junior Varsity Playoffs.

Parish Division: At the 3-minute mark of each quarter, the clock will stop, and at the next "natural" pause in a game (out of bounds, defensive rebound, foul, etc.), all players currently on the bench are required to enter the game. The clock will stop as normal at the end of each quarter.

Minimum Participation for Postseason Eligibility - Varsity Region, Varsity, Parish, and JV Region

All players whose teams are eligible to participate in post-season playoffs or end-of-seson tournaments must play in a minimum of 60% of all games in which they are available to play. The table below provides a guideline for the requirement.

Athletes who are unavailable due to injury, illness, bereavement, or other compelling reasons (excluding vacations and other discretionary time off) will have to participate in at least 60% of all of the games in which they are available (e.g., if a player misses 4 games of a 12 game season due to injury, that player will have to play in at least 5 of the other 8 games to be playoff eligible). Documentation of injuries or illnesses (doctor's notes, eyewitness accounts, ...) may be required in the case of disputes. PENALTY: Any player not meeting the minimum playing time requirement is ineligible for all post-season region and Archdiocesan play.

Just for Fun!

A Basketball Player's Prayer

Lord, give me strength to shoot the ball,

And when I do please let it fall

Then let me run to the other end,

The other team, help me defend.

Let me jump and grab the ball

When off the rim the shot does fall.

Help me make the pass that's right

So that the scoreboard we can light.

Show me how to play this sport,

Let me fly around the court.

And whether we should lose or win,

Let us the other team commend.

But first of all, dear Lord, I pray,

please tell the coach to let me play!
